Not many films terrified the world the way Jaws did back in 1975. From its eerie music to its bloody deaths, there’s no question as to why people were afraid to go into the water after seeing it. Besides its visceral effect on film-goers, Jaws also changed the way we think about summer movies. Cinephiles can experience the great white terror all over again at TIFF Bell Lightbox with a week-long run of the digitally-restored flick.

Here are five reasons why Jaws still rules.

1. The theme song.

Everyone knows it. And it scares the bejesus out of us every time we hear it.

2. No CGI.

That’s right. Before we were inundated with all of this computer-generated imagery, there was something called “fake fear.” You got scared even if the monster coming at you looked ridiculously, well, fake. It’s called imagination, folks.

3. It was the first summer blockbuster ever.

Nowadays, we look forward to the next superhero or comic book adaptation headed to our local movie house during the summer months. You can thank Jaws for our pop cultural Pavolivan reaction. It was the first movie to open in wide release at the beginning of summer and Hollywood never looked back.

4. It’s why we have Happy Meals.

The marketing behind Jaws was uniquely ubiquitous: clothing, toys, games and books were all created to capitalize on the film. So you can blame Steven Spielberg for your Terminator slurpee cup collection.

5. Quint’s death.

One of the best death scenes ever. It’s almost downright laughable when you realize that shark looks totally fake, but somehow it still scares us. That’s what a good movie does: it grabs you hook, line and sinker.
