Yonge & 401 flyover could ease traffic

The City of Toronto is moving ahead on plans to alleviate traffic issues at Yonge Street and Highway 401, which could lead to the construction of a southbound to eastbound flyover ramp.

Toronto City Council adopted a motion last month to seek financial assistance from the province to undertake a municipal class environmental assessment study, which will consider several options to address traffic congestion at the interchange.

The study will establish which solution is preferable, said Coun. John Filion in an interview before council’s vote.

“We need to urgently get that study completed and then to move into design and construction phase of whatever solution we come up with,” he said.

Constructing a flyover ramp has the highest price tag of the options to be considered in the study and is estimated to cost $25 million. Other options include roundabouts, diverging diamond concepts and a dual left onto Lord Seaton Road for southbound traffic from Yonge Street.

For the chosen solution to materialize, Filion said the province and the city would need to evenly split the cost.

West Lansing Homeowners Association vice-president Mike Capotosto said that a solution is long overdue and the city has been told to address the issue for the past 20 years.

“It’s just unfortunate that they’ve been dragging their heels for so long and the problem is aggravated by the fact that the province has to co-operate with the city,” he said.
