Where are they now: Graham Greene from Dances with Wolves

It isn’t very often that Canadian actors get feted at the Academy Awards ceremony south of the border. And, 2014 is no different. So, it is important to make note of the recognition when it comes.

A couple of decades ago, local actor Graham Greene was nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role in Dances with Wolves. Released in 1990, the Kevin Costner flick won six Academy Awards and was nominated for an additional five.

Greene portrayed medicine man Kicking Bird. Another local actor the late Maury Chaykin was also in the film. And, apparently, two domesticated buffalo were borrowed from another former Toronto resident, Neil Young.

Greene grew up on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario and moved to Toronto to attend the Centre for Indigenous Theatre’s Native Theatre School. He was in a slew of TV and film productions and was likely one of the most recognizable faces on Canadian screens.

Greene also starred in the world premiere of Tomson Highway’s famous Canadian play Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto.

Greene re-emerged last year as one of the stars of the fine new science fiction TV series Defiance, also starring Toronto’s Mia Kirschner. The second season will premiere in 2014.
