Now that the flurry of shopping for Christmas gifts is done with, you can finally enjoy the (other) true meaning of the holidays: relaxation. And nothing says relaxation quite like a weekend full of music, spending time with the kids in your life, and helping out charitable causes. Oh, and singing along with a Julie Andrews flick. Happy Holidays, everyone!
What's in the Box
When: Dec. 26-Dec. 30, doors open at 7 p.m.
Where: Drake Underground, 1150 Queen St. W.
Details: Considering the wealth of turkey, wine, and Christmas pudding you consume over the holidays (and the amount of family interaction that comes with it), the 7th annual installment of the Drake's mini music-fest, and the head-moshing, toe-tapping and decibel-busting music that comes with it might be exactly what you need. Rich Aucoin and Kevin McPhee are among the slated performers, and tickets are $5 and available at the door.
Toronto Zombie Walk Fiendraiser
When: Dec. 27, 9 p.m.
Where: 3030, 3030 Dundas West
Details: The Zombie Walk experienced some technical difficulties due to inclement weather, so the good folks behind it are putting on a fundraiser at 3030, featuring draws, prizes, zombie movies, music, and 3030's local draughts on tap. Tickets are $15 (or $10 if you dress in proper zombie fashion) and proceeds will benefit the Zombie Walk.
The Wooden Sky's 4th Annual Holiday Revue
When: Dec. 29, 7 p.m.
Where: 918 Bathurst Centre, 918 Bathurst St.
Details: The holidays are chockfull of parties and drinking, but they're also a time for thinking of and helping those less fortunate than yourself. This year's Holiday Revue will feature Nick Ferrio (of Nick Ferrio and His Feelings) and will help raise funds for the Daily Bread Food Bank. They're also accepting non-perishable food contributions.
Long Winter Kids
When: Dec. 28, 12 p.m.
Where: The Great Hall, 1087 Queen St. W.
Details: The Long Winter series is now in its second year, and might be better known for sets featuring a lively mix of literary readings, drinking, music and art installations. But this year, they're turning their attention to tots aged 0-12 with a daytime (12 p.m. – 5 p.m.) event featuring arts and crafts, puppet and aerial silks performances, an interactive "sampling castle studio playhouse for kids," and of course, music. Admission is PWYC.
Sing-a-long Sound of Music
When: Dec. 26-Dec. 28, various times
Where: TIFF Bell Lightbox, 350 King St. W.
Details: The hills certainly will be alive with the sound of a theatre-full of people crooning along with classic musical The Sound of Music. And yes, costumes are encouraged, so you'll finally have the chance to wear that dress made from curtains.
