The weather is finally warming up, so why not enjoy a good ol' fashioned pillow fight—outdoors, that is. If arts and culture are more your speed this weekend, enjoy a showcase of up-and-coming video game designers, stop by the AGO for their latest exhibit, or indulge your love for vintage books.
Level Up Showcase
When: April 4, 5 pm to 10 pm
Where: Design Exchange, 234 Bay St.
Details: Love video games? Want to know who's in the vanguard of designing them? Stop by the 4th annual Level Up Showcase, which will highlight the work of design, animation and computer science students from across Ontario. Admission is free.
Francis Bacon and Henry Moore: Terror and Beauty
When: April 5 to July 20, 2014
Where: AGO, 317 Dundas St. W.
Details: British artists Francis Bacon and Henry Moore both used the human body to depict themes of hardship and survival, making them a fitting pair for this new exhibit on at the AGO. Featuring over 130 pieces—including paintings, sculptures and archival materials—the exhibit is an exploration of two key figures in 20th century British art. This is the first Canadian exhibition of Bacon's work (and there'll also be rarely-seen pieces from Henry Moore).
Pillow Fight Toronto 2014
When: April 5, 3 pm
Where: Nathan Phillips Square
Details: The title pretty much says it all. Bring along a feather-free pillow (or several), and dress according to this year's theme (superheroes and villains)—or, for that true bedtime experience, in your coziest pyjamas. Await the signal, and unleash soft, downy mayhem.
Old Book and Paper Show
When: April 6, 10 am to 4 pm
Where: Artscape Wychwood Barns, 601 Christie St.
Details: If you count yourself among those who still appreciate the smell and feel of an old book (rather than the smooth, impersonal sensation of a smartphone or e-reader), stop by the Wychwood Barns for a celebration of all things paper. With a focus on rare books, antique maps, and vintage photography (as well as sewing patterns), consider it a love letter to a bygone era. Admission is $8.
Cupcakes and Cocktails
When: April 5, 7 pm to 11 pm
Where: Bite Bar, 57 Elm St.
Details: Marry bite-sized desserts and cocktails and you've pretty much covered off my (and I'd assume, most people's) favourite things. Bite Bar anticipates this by kicking off their "Cupcakes and Cocktails" series this Saturday evening (the program will be in place Thursday to Saturday evenings afterwards), where you can enjoy complimentary bites while indulging in their new menu of martinis, cocktails, and spiked hot drinks.
