All Nuit Long
It is an event that night owls and art connoisseurs circled on their calendars months in advance. Nuit Blanche (Sept. 29) will once again offer free art installations across downtown Toronto from Saturday night (starting at 7:03 p.m.) to sunrise on Sunday morning. You never really know the highlights of the event until you see them for yourself, but Geoffrey Pugen’s installation (100 Queen St. W.) and Yves Caizergues’ Green Invaders (150 King St. W.) look like standouts.
Bowling for Soup
Celebrate the beginning of fall by slurping some soup at Soupalicious. Artscape Wychwood Barns hosts this year’s soup tasting on Sunday (Sept. 30) from noon till 5 p.m. Your $10 ticket gets you entry to the event, plus 10 samples of soup. Sample some fall flavors like sweet potato soup and butternut shrimp bisque, or try Mantracker sidekick Phil Lemieux’s prey soup. Don’t worry, if you need to sip more then 10 soups, additional tastings can be purchased for $1.
Ben Harper Goes Acoustic
Massey Hall may not be rocking on Saturday night, but it will serve as host to an eclectic blend of soulful alternative, reggae and hip-hop music as two-time Grammy award winner Ben Harper returns to Toronto for an intimate acoustic evening (Sept. 29, Massey Hall). The multi-instrumentalist will put his musical talents on display as he ventures through a considerable discography that includes tracks like “Steal My Kisses,” “Another Lonely Day” and “Burn One Down.”
A (Mount) Pleasant Experience
The Mount Pleasant Village community is ready for its annual fall close-up. The area’s third Harvest Fair (Sept. 29, Mount Pleasant Village) will usher in autumn with family-friendly activities, such as a petting zoo, a pumpkin carving contest, an apple pie bake-off and a scavenger hunt, plus the participation of many local businesses.
A Cure for Your Sweet Tooth
The International Centre will be a hub of tantalizing aromas and, well, gluttony this weekend as Canada's Baking and Sweets Show (Sept. 28-30) takes over. The convention of bakers, sugar lovers and chocoholics will feature celebrity appearances from noted baking stars like “Ace of Cakes” Duff Goldman, the DC Cupcakes girls and Food Network host Anna Olson. For those just looking to sneak a few delectable tastes, there will be no shortage of samples at any of the many exhibitions and baking competitions taking place throughout the three days of the show.
