Weekend Warrior: Casablanca and the TSO, Wavelength Fest, Winterfolk Fest, Heartbreak Karaoke, and Family Sunday in the Beach

The long weekend is upon us. Feeling anxious about all that extra time? Whether you plan on spending time with your significant other, your family, or even by your lonesome, we’ve got you covered. In this edition: Casablanca with live music from the TSO, two music festivals, sad karaoke, and family Sunday in The Beach Village.

Casablanca with the TSO

When: Feb. 14-15, 8 pm
Where: Roy Thompson Hall
Details: Lose yourself in the romance of film and live music as the TSO performs Max Steiner’s iconic score to the 1942 classic Casablanca. There’s nothing better to get you in the mood for love than watching the on-screen chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, and listening to the luscious symphonic accompaniment. There will be a pre-concert chat event in the lobby of the Royal Thompson Hall with film critic Richard Crouse on Feb. 14 at 7:15 pm. Tickets range between $39 and $110.

Wavelength Festival

When: Feb. 13-16
Where: Various Venues
Details: Sick of the bands on your iPod? Let Wavelength help. The underground music festival, a self-described “live curated mixtape,” is back for its 14th year. Exposing undiscovered talent (the festival has featured early performances by the likes of Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire) while also bringing in established acts such as guitar hero Marnie Stern, Wavelength is bound to offer up some fresh sounds.

Winterfolk XII

When: Feb. 14-16
Where: Various venues on the Danforth
Details: Showcasing the best of urban, blues, rock, jazz, country, folk, and roots music, the Winterfolk Fest just might be the cure to your mid-winter blues. Emulating “a multi-stage rural summer festival,” Winterfest will give you a taste of warmer weather and highlight over 150 artists at five different venues. The festival will also feature special tribute events, an awards ceremony, community stages and various themed musical workshops.

WORN Fashion Journal Presents: Heartbreak Karaoke 2014

When: Feb. 14, 9 pm
Where: Monarch Tavern (12 Clinton St.)
Details: Sing your aching heart out, all while supporting independent publishing! What better way to soothe a broken heart than by drunkenly belting out "Total Eclipse of the Heart "in front of a crowd? And it's all for a good cause, as proceeds go to WORN. Cover is $7 ($5 if you dress in red or pink), and once you're in, it’s $1 per song, $10 to cut in line, and $5 to sing a Celine Dion song.

Family Sunday in the Beach

When: Feb. 16, 12 pm to 5 pm
Where: From Lockwood Road to Beech Avenue along Queen St.
Details: Spend some quality time with your family, while exploring Toronto’s Beach Village. There will be ice sculpture carving demonstrations, free rides on a vintage trolley, performances by the travelling figure skating troupe Glisse on Ice, a lumberjack show, bouncy castles, music, and more. The event is free and runs from noon until 5 pm.
