Weekend Warrior: 2014 Green Living Show, Opera Atelier’s Persée, Get Lit, Guy Maddin’s Seances, PRISM and the Spring Wedding Show

PRISM

When: April 27 to April 30
Where: Arta Gallery, 14 Distillery Lane
Details: Take a gander through Toronto’s Distillery District, and stop by Arta Gallery for this showcase of the finest work from the 2014 graduating class of University of Guelph-Humber’s Image Arts program and view fresh photographic perspectives from a new generation of artists. The exhibit is presented as part of the Emerge multimedia project, and the opening reception will take place 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. 

Opera Atelier’s Persée

When: April 26 to May 3
Where: Elgin Theatre, 189 Yonge St.
Details: The Greek myth of Perseus returns to the Toronto stage this weekend as Opera Atelier remounts one of their cornerstone productions, Persée. When the company first debuted the extravagant show, it was the first fully staged production of the opera since 1770 at Versailles' Royal Opera House. Their 2004 remount was the subject of a documentary that cemented the company’s status on the international scene. Don’t miss your chance to see this lavish opera, which will also be returning to Versailles for a three-show run in May. Tickets range between $38 and $166.

GetLit

When: Thursday April 24 (6p.m. – 10p.m.)
Where: Neubacher Shor Contemporary Gallery at the Toronto Reference Library (5 Brock Ave.)
Details: Get your dose of CanLit this Thursday night at the Toronto Reference Library. GetLit features readings by Canadian literary celebrities like Amanda Lang, Robyn Doolittle and MuchMusic’s Damian Abraham. All funds raised go to the Running and Reading Club which helps underprivileged kids across Canada, and celeb chef Jo Lusted will be serving up eats out of her new book Dish Do-Over. Tickets are $100 and $60 for the under 25 set. 

The Green Living Show 2014

When: Friday April 25 -Saturday April 26 (10a.m. – 7p.m.), Sunday April 27 (10a.m. – 7a.m.)
Where: Direct Energy Centre (100 Princes Blvd – Lakeshore Blvd. West and Strachan Ave)
Details: Come out and see what’s on the cusp in green technology and lifestyle. Friday offers a youth program and on the weekend you can sample the latest in sustainable fasion and eats. Plus there’s the handing out of the 2014 Green Car Award. Why not get in the spirit take advantage of the Bike Valet service? Tickets go for $16 ($12 for seniors and students with a valid ID) and children under 12 get in free.

Spring Wedding Show

When: Saturday April 26 (10a.m. – 4p.m.)
Where: The Drake Hotel, 1150 Queen Street West
Details: It’s the fourth year for Toronto’s indie wedding show. Vendors will have their products and services up for grabs for those just pondering the notion of getting hitched to those just days from walking up the aisle. There’s even a contest to win a “Big Love Ball” (think bouncing ball rather than soiree) for use in an engagement photoshoot.

Guy Maddin’s Seances

When: Sunday April 27 (7p.m.)
Where: Drake Underground, 1150 Queen Street West
Details: Award-winning Canadian filmmaker and artist Guy Maddin’s Seances is coming to the Drake Underground. Seances re-imagines lost silent film classics in an interactive format. Maddin has shot footage in Paris, Montreal and his hometown Winnipeg for the project. Sunday night there’s four offerings shot at the Winnipeg Art Galllery. Musical accompaniment will be provided by Christine Bougie, Chris A. Cummings (Marker Starling), and Dafydd Hughes. Cover is $15 or $10 with a valid student ID.
