WaffleU joins the dessert craze north of Toronto

At this point, why is anyone eating desserts anywhere but in the 905? We kid — but not really. Those with inclinations toward the saccharine can do a veritable tour of the sweet spots dotted about our area. Many just do one thing and do it well. WaffleU is a recent addition to the scene.

Since opening its doors, WaffleU has been attracting devoted customers through word of mouth and a mouth-watering Instagram account. This low-key wafflery is the work of Alex Puzo, who first became smitten with the classic Liège-style waffle while attending culinary school in Norway.

With a playful logo that mimics a university coat of arms, Puzo is devoted to the Belgian cross-hatched dessert and uses an adaptation of a 400-year-old recipe. Doors open at noon sharp, and the stream of kids attempting to major in the subject will continue until the 99th waffle has been served.

Why 99?

“The reason behind 99 is I hate food waste,” Puzo says. “With 99, I know they’ll sell out.”

Each made-to-order unit can be transformed into a mountain or a molehill — whatever your personal preference.

Load the sucker up with everything from fresh fruit (strawberries, bananas) to nuts (walnuts, pecans) to odds and sods (Oreo powder, wafer rolls). Using locally made ice cream, WaffleU always serves vanilla, chocolate and strawberry along with a rotating monthly pick (like salted caramel), and Nutella and dulce de leche fill out the sauce side of things.

The best part? Each order rings in at $10, no matter how many toppings you add.
