The Soaps
A smash hit at this summer’s Fringe Festival, this critically-acclaimed improv troupe amplifies the uber-dramatics of soap opera to uproarious comedic effect.
Comedy Bar, 945 Bloor St. W., 416-551-6540. Dec. 1.
The Wizard of Oz: The Wickedly Wacky Family Musical!
What’s the holidays without a pantomime by the wonderfully wacky (and talented) Ross Petty? This year the theatre producer and actor takes on the L. Frank Baum classic, and even dons a hat and cape as the Wicked Witch of the West.
Elgin Theatre, 189 Yonge St., 416-872-5555. Dec. 1–Jan. 6.
Jesus Chrysler
No, this world premiere of Dora-award winning playwright Tara Beagan’s play isn’t about religion or automobiles. It’s about kickass Toronto activist and director Eugenia “Jim” Watts, someone you’ve probably never heard about (but should have) until now.
Theatre Passe Muraille, Backspace, 16 Ryerson Ave., 416-504-7529. Dec. 1–Dec. 11.
Crush
This may not be based on that Alicia Silverstone movie, but it sounds equally as creepy: a man moves into a trailer park and gets the attention of a gay man and his female friends, which ultimately leads to desire and violence.
Factory Theatre, Studio, 125 Bathurst St., 416-504-9971. Dec. 2–Dec. 11.
Students Rock the Nite
Shameless plug: if you’re in the mood for a little comedy on Wednesday night and don’t want to shell out the big bucks, you might want to stop by The Second City’s John Candy Box and watch the (ahem) funny-in-training students (including yours truly) take the stage. You never know: you might end up seeing some of them on the main stage one day. Or a Walmart commercial.
John Candy Box Theatre, 70 Peter St., 416-340-7270. Nov. 30.
