The Ugly One
German playwright Marius von Mayenburg’s social satire centres around a man who undergoes plastic surgery, changing his appearance. He enjoys his new beauty until his plastic surgeon offers his face to others. Whoops!
Tarragon Theatre, Extra Space, 30 Bridgman Avenue, 416-531-1827. Oct. 4-16.
The Crucible
Ryerson Theatre School presents what is arguably Arthur Miller’s most famous play. Though the timing of the play seems fitting, what with Halloween just around the corner, the theme of the Salem witch trials has actually more to do with McCarthyism than Satanism.
Abrams Studio Theatre, 46 Gerrard Street East, 416-979-5118. Oct. 4-13.
Side by Side by Sondheim
Whether you’re a lover of musical theatre or not, chances are you’ve heard a Stephen Sondheim tune before. “Send in the Clowns,” anyone? Maybe “I Feel Pretty”? Anyway, the acclaimed American lyricist and composer has created works that aren’t as popular as these ones — but just as good — and this revue takes them out of obscurity.
The Walmer Centre Theatre, 188 Lowther Avenue, 416-924-1121. Oct. 5-23.
Sex, Religion & Other Hang-Ups
James Gangl’s one-man-show was the toast of this year’s Fringe, and if you didn’t catch his comical-yet-touching (no pun intended) true story on sex and religion, now’s your chance to do so.
Theatre Passe Muraille, 16 Ryerson Avenue, 416-504-7529. Oct. 6-22.
Best. Monday. Ever.
As we all know, Mondays are cringe-inducing, boring and even a little manic. But the funny folks at Second City are trying to show Mondays some love with this sketch/improv/musical show that may or may not feature unicorns.
Second City, 51 Mercer Street, 416-343-0033. Oct. 3-Nov. 14.
