Our weekly recap of the week’s news nuggets in Toronto will bring you up to date and add some fuel to your small-talk tank heading into the weekend.
Deadmau5 tries to sell his purrari
Toronto EDM artist Deadmau5 may wear a giant mouse head when he performs, but it appears he has a thing for cats. The DJ is selling his blue 2013 Ferrarri on Craigslist for $380,000. According to the ad, it “purrs like a Nyancat.” For any bids over $380,000, the difference will be donated to the Toronto Humane Society. Nyanyanyan!
Soknacki would ban street parking on main streets
Of the five major mayoral candidates, David Soknaki has been trailing in the polls, but he’s been doing his best to keep grabbing headlines. Asked how he would help move traffic faster, he proposed banning street parking at all times on arterial roads, and that the areas downtown are too valuable to be wasted on parking.
Chow opts for more bike lanes
Not to be outdone, Olivia Chow has released a platform on cycling (of course). Chow’s four-year plan includes building 200 km of separate cycle lanes to create a safer climate for cycling in the city. She also vows to fast-track current bike lane projects. It's not particularly surprising, the most left-leaning candidate aiming to please the cyclists, and it's not quite as ambitious as Soknacki’s parking plan, but she’s definitely aiming to please her core audience.
2008 Globe column’s dark foreshadowing
Here’s a blast from the past. A 2008 column from the Globe’s John Barber says of then-councillor Rob Ford’s antics, "It's not funny any more… the Rob Ford farce is the public face of personal tragedy. Watching is ghoulish, not watching is impossible." Do you think Ford took this column as a challenge to lower the bar?
Gord Perks reacts to Mammoliti’s “pedophile district” comment
Leftist councillor Gord Perks was quick to come to the defence of his Parkdale ward after right-winger Giorgio Mammoliti referred to the neighbourhood as a “pedophile district” in a news release. In an effort to ban EDM shows at Exhibition Place, which sits at the south end of Parkdale. Perks took the high road, and encouraged his constituents to spread positivity and "#ParkdaleLove" around the social media-sphere — and the responses did not disappoint. Check out this cool short, “Welcome to Parkdale” by local resident Luke Leveille.
So does Torontoist
With remarkably quick turnaround time, Torontoist released their version of those famous Toronto neighbourhood maps, with what they’re guessing would be Mammo’s interpretation of the neighbourhoods and their own “fetishes.” Highlights include Rouge Valley’s label of “Beastiality District” and the Beaches, a.k.a. “Orgies.”
“Complete Disaster” on St. Clair may be a life-saver
Last year, when Rob Ford referred to the St. Clair streetcar as an LRT and as a “complete disaster,” it was hard to argue with the guy on the second point — the lane-separated streetcar line has been horribly unpopular among business owners thanks to the disruptions its construction cost. But a report by the Hospital for Sick Children has found that pedestrian-motorist collisions on St. Clair have decreased significantly since it came in, and they credit those lanes. What a beautiful disaster!
Leslieville resident takes plant thievery seriously
Every summer, plant thievery becomes a strange phenomenon in Toronto. This Leslieville resident, upset with the loss of their dahlia, posted a strongly-worded note in its place, featuring literary gems such as “I hope that sewer slime oozes into your basement and rots your house.” For the record, the resident later reported that the brazen plant thieves returned and stole more of their beautiful flora.
Thornhill woman’s stroke selfie
We normally have a lot of fun with “10 Easy Clicks,” but this Thornhill woman’s video could help save a life. When 49-year-old Stacey Yepes first thought she was having a stroke, doctors told her it was stress. Yepes then filmed herself the next time she experienced the sensation. The video may be uncomfortable to watch, but Yepes exhibits the telltale signs of a stroke before the camera. After being properly diagnosed by Mount Sinai Hospital, the University Health Network got Yepes’ permission to publish the video with the hopes of spreading awareness of stroke signs.
Reddit user steveodore’s concert aggregator
This Reddit user has created a simplistic and minimalist aggregator for local concerts, first launched in the early spring but now re-released with a slightly different look. Users have been loving the stripped-down style and the musical previews. Surely you’ll find somewhere to go cut a rug this weekend!
