Fordamania running wild on you, brother
According to recent media reports, the video of Rob Ford threatening to kill someone is actually just a very bad imitation of professional wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, of Hulkamania fame. Apparently, the claim is made in Ford’s statement of defence filed on Wednesday for an upcoming court battle versus Scott MacIntyre.
The guru cometh
The summer, the meditative event to end all meditative events will take place in Toronto and boast the one and only Deepak Chopra. Seduction of Spirit is a multi-day event that will feature many teachers in addition to Chopra.
Toronto Mayor Barbie
As if the political situation in this city couldn’t get any more disturbing, a so-called “professional dominatrix” has entered the race to challenge Rob Ford for the mayorship of Toronto this October. And her name is Mizz Barbie Bitch. Cute right?
Is Normcore for real?
The first big fashion meme of 2014 is apparently something called “normcore” which is either just wearing unassuming, average clothing — such as straight leg jeans and baseball caps — or being forcefully neutral. Whatever that means. Or, wait — is that just "acting basic?" Seems like everyone’s confused. Clearly, this is a trend worth supporting either way. And if you need me, I’ll be shopping for khakis.
Water everywhere
A massive new water park is heading for the city, if a group of developers get their way. The plan calls for a 9,300 square foot facility complete with a sandy beach, wave pool and lazy river. The location has yet to be revealed.
Coach heaps the opposite of praise on goalie
Randy Caryle, head coach of the underwhelming-of-late Toronto Maple Leafs, showed some real class this week when he seemd to call out goalie james Reimer after a losing effort saying that his keeper was “OK, just OK.” Maybe if the coaching was OK, we wouldn’t be losing so many darn games.
Bloody big deal is right
Well, it didn’t take long for Toronto FC’s big-time off-season aquisitions to make some noise, as the Major League Soccer season got underway this week. Midfielder Michael Bradley was very solid, and Jermaine Defoe potted two goals in a winning debut, garnering MLS Player of the Week status for his efforts.
Saddest. Story. Ever.
You know the city is heading in the wrong direction when a person’s dog is stolen at gunpoint. That is all.
Random wonders
In a story that has absolutely nothing to do with Toronto, but is too great to pass up: an artist in Bristol, U.K. is planning on building a massive water slide as an alternative form of public transit along a big hill linking two neighbourhoods. This is the kind of progressive thinking we need in this city when it comes to transit. Why not just take all that money and just buy everyone a bicycle. There I said it.
Not all that jazz
The wonderful, beloved and extremely popular Beaches Jazz Festival is facing cuts to its programming after the Province of Ontario decided to no longer offer the event their $75,000 grant that represents 20 per cent of their budget. No jazz hands for you, Kathleen Wynne.
