The Pitch: Actor Paul Gross on why you should go and see ‘Domesticated’

Martha and I are doing a play by the American writer Bruce Norris called Domesticated. It’s a fairly short run. We start rehearsing toward the end of October, and it runs through to Christmas, I think. It’s a fantastic play. It’s really funny, but it’s also very edgy. It’s about a guy who is the secretary of health of the state of New York. The play opens with him doing one of those horrible press conferences where he admits to an infidelity, begs forgiveness. As it turns out, he has been having sex with a prostitute who has fallen or been pushed and hit herself on something and is now in a coma. Of course, the marriage explodes. You follow all of that inside the family life as it blows up. It’s a very interesting, very incisive and uncomfortable play but also extremely funny. I think it should be fantastic. We have this idea that we will follow couples out of the theatre and see if they get in the same car and go home.

Domesticated runs at Canadian Stage’s Bluma Appel Theatre Nov. 17 to Dec. 13, www.canadianstage.com.
