Spotted: The poké trend lands in Toronto

Trends tend to hit south of the border first, and there was no exception with poké. Hawaii’s quintessential raw fish salad — pronounced “POH-keh” — is pretty much the Polynesian version of tuna tartare and has been having quite the mainland moment in America.

Fortunately, Torontonians can now partake, thanks to two poké-only additions to the resto scene: Big Tuna Poké Bar and North Poké. The former has opened shop in the Annex and serves dishes like the Big Katuna (cubed ahi tuna with ponzu and sesame oil served atop rice) to a steady stream of customers.

Meanwhile, North Poké is set to open shop in Kensington Market in early August. Its focus will be on takeout, reminiscent of fish markets in Hawaii, and signature dishes will include albacore tuna with black garlic dressing, charred jalapeno and pickled onions and salmon with kimchi crema.
