Something men ought to know about: this totally unconventional pea coat from Outclass

Sometimes, when you least expect it, someone comes along with a little flair and imagination and takes a classic staple — like the ubiquitous pea coat — and transforms it from forgettably basic to something boldly unique.

Case in point: This coat right here, courtesy of on-the-rise Toronto label Outclass Attire (think high-quality threads for the urban man who's partial to an outdoorsy aesthetic).

"That jacket is my favourite piece from the collection, a piece I designed for myself," says Outclass Creative Director Matteo Sgaramella (an OCAD Graphic Design alum). Whilst constructing the coat's body, Sgaramella used an ultra-warm, 28 oz Woolrich wool that's made in the U.S.A. The coat's contrasting sleeves come lined with Japanese bemberg silk, which is "the same fabric found in super high-end suit lining," according to Sgaramella. The coat was made in one of the last remaining garment district factories downtown, the same one that used to produce for Club Monaco and Alfred Sung before their production shipped overseas.

Whether it's worn with a suit or some casual togs, this coat will surely elevate any look. However, a caveat: Make sure everything else you're wearing is muted. This one is on the louder side, and as such, should be treated as an anchoring piece for your outfit. Charcoal trousers, black combat boots, and a white oxford. No bright runners or anything like that.

$475 (originally $595). Available online at Outclass.
