Something men ought to know about: this plaid car coat by Toronto’s own Philip Sparks

Of all the designers who are putting Toronto on the menswear map, no one has been doing it quite like Philip Sparks.

For those of you who don't know, the Toronto-based designer has been producing his inimitable, '50s-inspired threads since 2007, when he founded his eponymous label (which now includes womenswear, ladies).

Sparks' men's garments are consistently classic, not to mention unapologetically masculine. Plus, the man's not one to shy from adding bolder, more refined touches to his clothes. One of his signatures, for instance, is blazers and jackets with big, wide lapels. It's the kind of thing that conjures up visions of Humphrey Bogart courting dames on stoops, and really, how could you not love that?

This car coat (traditionally known for their mid-thigh lengths and flat fronts) is one of Spark's newest pieces for spring, and epitomizes that manly (and aristocratic) aesthetic I mentioned earlier. It's made from 100% nylon—so rain won't stand a chance—and sports a beautiful red and yellow plaid design on a navy foundation. The coat's fit is forgiving enough to allow a light sweater or blazer to be worn underneath, so it'd be best to go one size smaller.

And did you catch that gorgeous, red pinstriped lining? Okay, just checking.

$495. Available online or in store at Philip Sparks, 162 Ossington Ave. #3, 647-348-1827
