The usual focus of this column is to introduce all of you to the fine men and women who make beautiful clothes for us in this city. And while supporting local manufacturing is a good thing (especially if we're going to truly show the world we can run with the bigger stylish cities), so is highlighting the folks who sell us these clothes.
One such merchant goes by the name of Donnell Enns, and when it comes to the science of retailing in Toronto, he is legend. He successfully runs one of the city's most acclaimed menswear shops—Yorkville's Uncle Otis. Aside from the fact that he's a wealth of menswear knowledge (and just really a nice dude), Ehms' operation earned its sterling name by carrying some of the most exclusive stuff you've seen. Plus, he's been known to collaborate with certain noteworthy brands.
So when Enns recently told me he'd just stocked this gorgeously minimalistic shirt jacket by British workwear master Oliver Spencer, I knew I had to pass it on. The garment also comes in a navy, but the army green you're looking at was made specifically for the shop and is a Canadian exclusive. A work of architectural art, the piece boasts an internal drawstring at the waist, a beautiful array of utilitarian pockets, as well as button roll-up sleeves for those balmier mornings we should be seeing any day now.
The idea here isn't to go fully Che Guevara with a military top. Contrast is key, so make like the team at Uncle Otis and pair this with something unconventional, like a muted paisley print shirt, or some salmon chinos.
$365, available online or in-store at Uncle Otis, 26 Bellair, 416-920-2281
