No, this is not an endorsement for wearing sweat pants…all the time, that is. There are still occasions for which sweats are not appropriate, but your Sunday morning saunter to the bookstore is a different story. Sweats (or "soft wear" as some call them) have recently experienced a renaissance of sorts.
For the past couple of years, designers have been slimming and structuring them in ways that have made them even (hear us out) suit-friendly. One of those designers is a young local man by the name of Matthew Davies, who has carved out a niche for himself with Twyford Clothing. His label specializes in one thing: making comfy, yet stylishly versatile sweat pants.
Davies — a former intern at Greta Constantine and Smythe — pairs functionality with design in his pieces. "I always like to highlight my civil engineering degree, and I approach my designs as I would the blueprints of a building." Each pair is made entirely in T.O. The drawstrings, for instance, are custom made at an undisclosed west end location. Oh, and the origin of the brand's name? "It's the name of the street I grew up on," Davies says. "When I think of comfort I tend to think of home."
