Most folks may not be aware of this, but South Korea is known for its affordable, stylish shoes. Young and Tae, a new Queen Street boutique devoted to the shoe, exemplifies this to a Toronto audience. The store, owned by couple David and Jenny Kim, is a bit of an insider scoop on the footwear scene what with its handpicked selection hailing from across the ocean.
Two years ago, the Kims moved to Seoul to learn the ins and outs of the shoe world. Thanks to some strong ties — a family-owned wholesale biz — the flagship shop gets primo pricing. Armed with their newfound knowledge, the duo hopped back over the pond and opened up shop.
Top picks include pony hair pumps ($125), available in leopard or black, and eye-catching oxblood riding boots ($170) which will see wearers from winter through spring. A pair of knee-high lace-ups ($275) are attention-grabbing yet wearable: “People just fall in love with them,” notes Jenny. Some styles have been fitted with a rubber sole to suit the Canuck winter and the shop carries sizes five and half to 10 — unlike in Korea where shoes tend to max out at eight. Soon, the shop will allow customers to have a role in the design of their shoe, mixing and matching various leathers, suedes and textiles to capture the shoe of their mind’s eye.
