Restaurant Update: Shooting at Michael’s, Markham Sansotei and La Carnita open

Broken windows, stolen cash registers, maybe the occasional kitchen altercation — these are the crimes that owners of Toronto’s restaurants mentally prepare themselves for. But 680 News is reporting that two 28-year-old patrons of Michael’s on Simcoe had to be hospitalized after they were shot by masked gunmen who barged into the restaurant. Both of the victims were rushed to hospital and were in stable condition this morning.

By comparison, the rest of the week’s restaurant news seems sedate. Here is who opened, closed and what we see on the horizon.

Just Opened

  • The 905 outpost for Sansotei, one of Toronto’s best bets for ramen, opened last week. [Facebook]
  • This was the opening weekend for the new downtown La Carnita at John and Adelaide.
  • Modo Mio is the new casual Italian spot in North York at 1923C Avenue Rd.

Coming Soon

  • Ramen is coming to the Beach. Kyouka has applied for a liquor license for the property at 2222 Queen St. E.

  • If you’re going to make the effort of going out to a restaurant for brunch it better be the best, right? With that in mind, we put the city’s pancakes to the Grant van Gameren taste test.
  • Where were Toronto’s top chefs this weekend? Many of them were at the inaugural Toronto Food & Wine Festival
  • North York was the proud recipient of Canada’s first outpost for Taiwan’s Bake Code fusion bakery and we got a first look.
  • Patrick Kriss has one of the most impressive pedigrees among his generation of Toronto chefs. Now that he has his own restaurant, the widely acclaimed Alo, we made him the subject of our food profile in September.
  • It took a while for the pain of Pastis’s closing to fade, but Joanne Kates visited its replacement, Sorrel, for one of her reviews this month.

Changes and Other News

  • I don't keep a running tally of restaurants that are likely to suffer the ignominity of a targeted shooting, but if I did Michael’s on Simcoe would not make the list.
  • Word came earlier this month that Turf Lounge has closed. The owners, Woodbine Entertainment Group, can’t be accused of not trying — they introduced a new chef and menu concept earlier this year.
