Restaurant Update: Chabrol, Glen Tavern, Wickson Social and Spiceman Mexicana open

Apparently, two is the magic number for restaurant openings this week as three of biggest — Wickson Social, Glen Tavern, and Chabrol — are the creations of restaurateur duos.

Just Opened

  • For such an established Toronto name, Greg Couillard's comeback has been rather quiet. His new place, Spiceman Mexicana, opened without much fanfare in the middle of last month.
  • Kerr and Carter (owners of The Oxley and Queen & Beaver) have made it a trio and opened Wickson Social on St. Joseph St.
  • Glen Tavern, the new project by Keith Froggett and Carl Korte of Scaramouche, has opened in Glen Williams, ON.
  • Closer to home, Chabrol the tiny Yorkville restaurant by another well-known Toronto restaurant duo — chef Doug Penfold and Niall McCotter of Cava — has opened at 90 Yorkville Ave.

Coming Soon

  • Levetto, the successful pizza and pasta bar is getting close to opening another Toronto location, this time in Chinatown.
  • The first week of December is set as the "training days" (British for "soft opening") for Jamie’s Italian at Yorkdale. There are still a few hours left in our contest for a free meal for two during this preview period.

Changes and Other News

  • Khabouth and Harji seem to have changed gears and cooled on the Citta concept. Their original in CityPlace has closed and what was to be the second opened as Figo instead.
  • After just seven months in business the Toronto outpost of Buster Rhino's BBQ has closed.
  • After closing in August of this year, Rancho Relaxo has made a comeback as a takeout operation in the Junction Triangle at 1635 Dupont.
  • Sam James, the very well-known Toronto coffee entrepreneur expressed his displeasure via Instagram at the news that the Sam James Coffee Pocket is being forced out of their building on Ossington. Shinola, the Detroit-based retailer of all things hipster, is set to move in. Naturally, there is already a petition on change.org called for the retailer to reverse their position.
