Things are happening in Midtown Toronto. Big things. The neighbourhoods are evolving and growing as a steady stream of new residents adds life and vitality to the area. And there are no signs of a slowdown with the coming Crosstown LRT line set to open in 2020.
Vibe
It’s hard to believe the Sherwood Park neighbourhood exists so close to the hustle and bustle of Yonge and Eglinton. The leafy enclave located between Lawrence Park and Lytton Park offers a crafty mix of young and old, urban and suburban sensibilities, and it works. The streets are well treed and gorgeous. The families cruise the sidewalks with strollers, kids clamour. Life is centred upon a neighbourhood park — also home to one of the city’s best dog parks — of the same name.
Cost
In Sherwood Park, one finds a real mix of housing stock. There are condos close by, both proposed and existing, that can offer an entry into the neighbourhood. Most of the detached homes date back to the 1940s, and many have been updated or torn down and rebuilt with an eye to modernism. As a result, price points vary widely, but expect to pay more than $2 million for an updated and detached home.1940s, and many have been updated or torn down and rebuilt with an eye to modernism. Grub
The central location of Sherwood Park allows local residents to feast on some incredible food. There is an outpost of the Summerhill Market conveniently located on Mount Pleasant Road, for example. The chicken pot pie is legendary. Located to the west at Yonge Street is one of the finest big-night restaurants in the city, Mark McEwan’s North 44. But it’s not all upscale. There is also the diner Good Bite, for a tasty breakfast, and Louie’s Classico for some of the best pizza delivery in Midtown Toronto. And neighbourhood residents swear by the delish de Mello Palheta coffee roasters for their caffeinated morning victuals.
Scene
Sherwood Park is a beautiful park in the area that includes a giant off-leash area for the family pooch as well as numerous walking trails and play structures and a wading pool for children.
Walkability
Sherwood Park is a good walking neighbourhood ranking in the highest range of the walk index. Schools are close by, as are food shops and medical offices. There is, of course, abundant transit and more on the way.
Commute
Sherwood Park residents flock to Lawrence or Eglinton subway stations and are whisked away to their downtown destinations. It’s one of the top reasons people settle in the area. In addition, the exit strategy for getting out of town isn’t that cumbersome given the central location. Highway 401 is close by, as is the Don Valley Parkway and Highway 404 for northern travellers.
Schools
Local residents have numerous schools from which to choose. Nearby, there are two public high schools, Northern Secondary School and North Toronto Collegiate Institute. In addition, the private Greenwood College is in the area. Other private schools worth noting include Toronto French School, near the corner of Bayview and Lawrence, as well as Crescent School on Bayview Avenue.
