Forget Festival Express and Woodstock, now we have these summer music festivals where you can embrace your inner flower child.
Field Trip, June 4–5
In its fourth year, Field Trip was founded by the groovy folks at Arts & Crafts record label and showcases artists on its roster, combined with international offerings. Headliners include the National and Robyn sharing the stage with Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires and Toronto hip-hop phenom Jazz Cartier. There are also food vendors and a kids’ day camp, www.fieldtriplife.com.
Bestival, June 11–12
This whiz-bang U.K. import is likely the closest to a hippie-style festival. Participants check their inhibitions at the door and let loose via the costume parade, interactive installations or the inflatable church. Artists include the Cure and Tame Impala, Canadian fave Grimes and next-big-thing Daughter, www.bestival.ca.
Camp Wavelength, August 19–21
Wavelength has helped make this city one of the best in the world for live music. At Camp Wavelength, festival-goers camp on Toronto Island for three nights of great, usually local, live music as well as art installations, food, drinks, campfires and the beach. This year’s lineup will be announced soon, www.campwavelength.com.
In our June issue we took a look at how much Toronto has changed since the 1960s — and at the remarkable similarities and parallels. We’re publishing all of these stories online today. For more, follow along on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #Post60s.
