New location secured for Bar Volo

In May, Ben Johnson broke the sad news that Bar Volo would be closing this year after 28 years at the same Yonge St. address. In a familiar Toronto story, the landlord was ending their lease in favour of condo development, but Tomas Morana promised that his family would work to find a new spot and reopen as soon as possible.

Good news came today on their Facebook page as they announced that 582 Church St. will be the new second home for Toronto’s craft beer cognoscenti. The new address is one block east of the original at the northwest corner of Dundonald and Church.

The City of Toronto’s website lists 580-582 among its inventory or historically significant designated buildings. (So, probably immune from the threat of development.) An evaluation report the City published  says the semi-detached houses were built in 1877 by William St. Croix in the Second Empire style.

Sugo Trattoria was the previous tenant in the space and had a patio facing onto Church Street with about 24 seats.

Volo is scheduled to close its Yonge Street location on October 1 and since today’s announcement says, “although the transition won't be immediate we are hopeful to create the same vibe and concept in this space as we did at our Yonge St. location,” there may be a gap before the Church Street one opens.
