We consider ourselves lucky whenever we catch a flick of Alfred Hitchcock’s on TV — in measly 2D — so we were pretty excited to hear that his 1954 classic, Dial M for Murder, is screening tonight at the TIFF Bell Lightbox as originally intended: in 3D.

While 3D is the cinematic form du jour, the medium fizzled out pretty quickly back in the ’50s, so this film was screened in regular old 2D. Hitchcock himself was said to have disliked the form, dismissing it as a fad (which explains why Dial M for Murder is Hitch’s only 3D movie), but, being the masterful director that he was, his first and only attempt at 3D is apparently pretty phenomenal.

The flick is also better than ever with digitally-restored colour and sound, so it’s a perfect opportunity to discover — or rediscover — the thrill of the scissor scene or the breathtaking beauty of Grace Kelly up-close-and-personal.
