Modern masquerade: Four Torontonians who will wow the crowds with their costumes at this year’s Fan Expo

Here’s the scoop on what they’ll be wearing and which celeb they’ll be lining up to see

The legendary outlaw

Star-Lord’s day job is at a roofing company

Why Star-Lord?
James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, did an amazing job bringing a group of misfits together. I relate to many of the characters, and I’m a sucker for an underdog story.

How did you get into cosplay?
Fan Expo Toronto was the first time I dressed up, and it was amazing to see others sharing characters that way. There’s no right or wrong way to do it. It’s your love to share.

Celebs you want to see?
Shatner for sure. Star Trek is 50, and I’m a fan. I won’t miss any of those guests.

Fawning over fans

Peekaboo Cosplay is a nursing student

What’s your favourite costume?
Maleficent is special to me, but Fawn is definitely the most fun to wear.

How long does it take to make a costume?
Glinda from The Wizard of Oz took 197 hours.

What is the most you’ve spent on a build?
It cost $1,500 to make Glinda. I bought 15 metres of hoop skirt boning, 52 metres of tulle, 10 metres of satin, 20 metres of organza, thousands of rhinestones.

Celebs you want to see?
Joan Cusack and Michael Cudlitz, and I want to catch a glimpse of Stan Lee.

Costuming as a career

Lee Scion pays the bills as a seamstress and designer

What are your plans for Fan Expo?
I will be there the whole weekend dressed up as a human version of the piranha plant monsters from the Mario series and an original designed 1950s-style Sailor Jupiter. My other two costumes will be a surprise. I’m also hoping to see Margaret Atwood.

How did you get into cosplay?
I discovered it by chance. I was searching for images from a game I was playing and found a woman dressed as one of the characters. I found it fascinating and tried it out.

Enchanting you to the dark side

Northern Belle Rogue is a first mate, an ASL-English interpreter, an actress and a model

What was the first costume you designed?
My first major build was the Jim Lee version of Rogue from the ’90s X-Men original animated series. I rebuilt it three times over three years.

What will you be wearing at Fan Expo?
I’ll be there all four days. I’ll definitely pull out my Enchantress cosplay from Suicide Squad, one of my Wonder Woman versions and a secret build I’m working on.

Celebs you want to see?
John Cusack. Do I get him to sign my boom box or my Nick Hornby High Fidelity novel?
