Yacht rock keeners and seafood lovers take note: The Chase Fish and Oyster is doing brunch. Now that the weather has finally shaped up, the ideal prelude to a day at the water’s edge is a meal replete with the fruits of the sea.
Located in an expansive room with tall, tall ceilings, the more casual younger sib to The Chase is all about accessible seafood. Using sustainable ingredients as much as possible, the resto is currently in the process of getting their Ocean Wise certification which pairs nicely with those catchy tunes from yesteryear.
Best bet brunch-wise is to order up a selection of dishes for the table to share. For those who wanna let loose, go king crab cake Benedict ($29), which sees generous crab cakes swapped in for the usual English muffins. The goods are topped with poached Mennonite eggs and slathered in hollandaise. Decadent. Meanwhile, the salmon pastrami platter ($18) features salmon smoked over apple wood, which has imbued it with a delicate smoky flavour. Use the bagel as boxspring and dot the salmon mattress with capers, crème fraîche and salmon caviar. For sweet, tuck into the bananas Foster pancakes ($15), laced with dark rum and strewn with addictive candied pecans.
Finally, no table should go oyster unadorned. While the seafood platter ($50/$105) selection — available in small or large permutations — rotates based on what’s fresh, chances are they’ll have some Black Point, Shikoku and Malpeques, ready to be gussied up with freshly grated horseradish. The platter also comes with more: shrimp, clams, tuna and some rather tasty salmon deviled eggs. After this royal brunch a beach nap will be more than necessary.
