This past weekend, Buca Osteria & Bar previewed its brunch menu. Unsurprisingly, Rob Gentile’s midday offerings are more than just eggs, with items running the gamut from pizza and pasta to seafood dishes. However, it wouldn’t be brunch sans eggs; Gentile certainly seems to have a proclivity for the duck variety, which worked their way into many a dish. Come this weekend, Yorkville’s Buca shall start offering brunch to the public.
Start with one of the piatti freddi — the cold plates. The Capesante wows the palate; a trio of raw live gaspe scallops emerges from the kitchen dotted with senape (that’s Italian for mustard) yogurt, vibrant orange trout caviar and smoked ginger ($26). From the menu’s hot zone, we sampled the hand-rolled gnocchi with braised rabbit ($24), but preferred the more brunch-y Frico dish. Duck egg, salsa verde and melty Taleggio cheese come encased in a crispy potato wrapper and are paired with bitter greens ($18).
Sip on a latte miele (espresso topped with honey-infused milk) before tucking into something sweet. The mini Italian doughnuts come stuffed with dulce de leche crema and are so good you’ll forget you’re full.
And remember, that pesky 53 Scollard address means nothing: enter from Yorkville Avenue.
