Lunch Pick: French toast with bacon and maple cream cheese from Mitzi’s Cafe

Mitzi’s Cafe has been a mainstay of the Roncy ’hood for more than a handful of years now. And by handful, we mean 20. The charming little spot is squirreled away in a residential zone just off the main strip. Patrons can sit inside or out on the wee awning-covered patio, perfect for a rainy day brunch-y lunch.

The challah French toast takes the classic dish up a notch. Starring generous slices of challah coated in golden eggy batter, the dish may come with bacon and maple cream cheese drizzle and spiced pecans and fresh whipped cream (pictured) or other delightful concoctions such as banana custard and crumble. (While Mitzi changes its menu frequently, there’s bound to be some iteration of French toast.) Slices of fresh fruit — melon and orange wedges — complete the dish, along with a mound of home fries.

Try as you might, you may not be able to finish this dish; be sure to arrive hungry.
