Lunch Pick: Authentic Thai on College from Soi Tai Street Food

Once a mecca for Ital eats, T.O.’s Little Italy is no longer the place to head for the flavours of the boot. Admittedly, we do have A3 Napoli as a counter argument, but the majority of the ’hood’s new openings offer dishes from other parts of the world. Think: Spain, Japan and Thailand. Soi Thai Street Food aims to please patrons looking to hunker down with authentic Bangkok-style street eats. Just don’t come expecting to get your green curry fix.

Fittingly, the resto possesses a casual vibe, with a Bangkok-inspired mural and plenty of red stools, reminiscent of what you’d sit on in Thai alleyways. In the back, a mini marketplace showcases items like the (non-edible) Prickly Heat, known for its remarkable cooling properties that’ll see anyone through 40-degree heat. Food-wise, shareable items dot the menu like garlicky stir-fried morning glory and chicken skewers. Som tam, aka green papaya salad, comes laced with plenty of fish sauce and sprinkled with crunchy peanuts. We liked the khai krata song krueng: two pan-fried eggs topped with ground pork and Thai basil, spiced as you please.

Pair with a crisp Singha and some late summer heat, and you’ll swear you’re in the motherland.
