On Feb. 4, Toronto Centre voters chose Liberal candidate Glen Murray as their MPP. He took 47 per cent of the vote while NDP nominee Cathy Crowe trailed behind with 33 per cent.
Progressive Conservative candidate Pamela Taylor won 15 per cent of the vote, and Green Party candidate Stefan Premdas finished with three per cent.
The riding, which encompasses neighbourhoods such as Rosedale, Cabbagetown, Regent Park, to Church and Wellesley, has been a Liberal stronghold since 1999, when George Smitherman was elected to Ontario legislature. In 2007, Smitherman won the election by a landslide of over 12,000 votes.
Prior to his win, Murray said being an elected representative is a great opportunity to make a difference in the world.
“There are a lot of people who are trying to start businesses, launch their education and careers, and the provincial government touches all of their lives,” Murray said.
Murray was one of the first gay men elected into a major government in North America. He was elected mayor of Winnipeg in 1989, which he said was almost unprecedented.
"I lived a lot of my life living with a horrible amount of discrimination when I was younger," Murray said, which helped him learn the values of pluralism.
