Holt Renfrew is known for many things—chief among them, being a purveyor of luxe brands. Last year, however, they launched H Project, an initiative curated by Alexandra Weston, and intended to showcase different cultures and international artisans. This week, they’re unveiling the first instalment of the project: Uncrate India.
The Holts team embarked on a truly envy-inducing journey through Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur and Mandawa, sourcing products along the way. They were guided by Waris Ahluwalia, who partnered with Holts on the collection. Ahluwalia is the founder of House of Waris and a Vogue/CFDA Fund nominee (not to mention, erstwhile star of Wes Anderson films).
“The idea behind the ‘uncrate’ concept is to showcase the incredible products of different cultures and support the continuation of these amazing crafts around the world. We began with India and sought to explore the artisanal depth and discover the extraordinary products of the country and tell their extraordinary stories within our H Project shops,” said Weston in a press release.
You’ll find fine jewellery from House of Waris (as well as silk, cashmere, and cotton silk blend scarves featuring beautiful nature-inspired prints, $365-$495). Other notable pieces are fine leather accessories from Joli ($20-$150), including their grigris—small add-ons meant to bring good fortune that have been crafted from recycled pieces uncovered in Delhi markets.
From beautiful Batik-dyed silk pockets squares and scarves, to hand-woven rugs and floor pillows from Jaipur, this venture offers a glimpse into the traditions and craftsmanship of India through pieces from more than 16 designers. Best of all, there’s a charitable element as well: the shop will be supporting UNICEF's work in India with a $15,000 donation.
H Project is available in Toronto at the Bloor St. and Yorkdale Holt Renfrew locations until May 31, 2014.
