Gehry not worried about plans to destroy his childhood home in T.O.

Renowned architect Frank Gehry isn’t losing sleep over plans to destroy his childhood home in downtown Toronto to make way for another condominium.

The home, which belonged to Gehry’s grandmother, is located at 15 Beverley Street — a stone’s throw from the AGO he redesigned.

“I don’t think people should hold up the future for anchors from the past,” Gehry told The Globe and Mail by phone from Los Angeles.

“There are some things that should be preserved, but there’s a lot of stuff preserved that’s irrelevant, and I don’t think the fact that I or my grandparents were there has any real historic value to anybody.”

As for the new condo, Gehry was less than enthusiastic about the design, calling it "awful."

“I hope they don’t put a plaque in the lobby that says I lived there,” he said. “I would be insulted by that. Who wants a plaque with your name on it in some shitty-looking lobby?”
