Former governor general enters the sublime olive oil business

When Jeddou Ouldcheikhna moved to Toronto five years ago, he went on a hunt for frozen custard. When he realized none of the ice-cream places carried the frozen treat, Ouldcheikhna decided to open Jedd’s Frozen Custard. The shop currently offers vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and butter pecan custards (2470 Yonge St., 647-986-2020).

 

Adrienne Clarkson has been interested in growing olives since childhood when she discovered a myth about a couple who received olive oil as a gift from Zeus. “They were given olive oil as a great treasure,” says Clarkson. Decades later, her own brand of olive oil, Sublime, is for sale at the Spice Trader & the Olive Pit (877 Queen St. W., 647-430-7085).

 

When Pallucci opened 10 years ago, owners Neil and Michelle Siomra said rent on their Yorkville restaurant was going through the roof, so they decided to set up a restaurant in the Mount Pleasant area. Ten years later, they have a private dining room to boast of and award-winning dishes such as wild mushroom risotto (523 Mount Pleasant Rd., 416-484-9828).

 

Divana, the new jewellery store owned by Vered and Dov Lavi, has been a lifetime in the making. Vered, who moved with her husband from Israel eight years ago, says she has designed jewellery her whole life. The store offers high-end jewellery made personally by the Lavis, who currently sell their line in 180 Canadian stores (380 Eglinton Ave. W., 416-480-1222).

 

Salon de elephant is no stranger to the connection between hairstyling and art. The hair salon opened last month and was named after a Salvador Dali painting. “He wanted it to be more memorable,” says manager Karen Chin, referring to the name the owner picked out (5311 A Yonge St., 416-897-3300)
