For most people, Halloween is a time of year for ghouls, goblins and goodies, but one local has found a way to marry together the fun of the season and giving back to the community.
This Halloween, Chris Ainsworth will once again transform his property into Thornhill Woods Haunted House, while raising money for SickKids Hospital. This year marks the ninth season of the annual event, which over the years has helped raise over $20,000 for the hospital where Ainsworth’s sons, Ryan and Matthew, have been treated.
“They both benefited from the amazing care that SickKids Hospital provides here in Toronto,” said Ainsworth.
To bring the Thornhill Woods Haunted House to life, Ainsworth constructs a six-room, 420-square-foot haunted house on his driveway. Each room is complete with a sound system and detailed lighting and has a different theme, such as a freezer and a morgue. Outside, projectors illuminate ghosts onto the windows of the house, and the lot is transformed into a cemetery filled with skeletons and zombies.
Ainsworth asks for a $2 donation from those walking through the haunted house, but people can also contribute directly to SickKids on the Thornhill Woods Haunted House website.
In addition to helping SickKids, Ainsworth said that he does this for the community.
“We want to be that house that all the kids in our neighbourhood remember growing up,” he said.
The Thornhill Woods Haunted House runs from Oct. 26 to 31 from 6 p.m. to about 9 p.m. at 1 Krisbury Ave. in Thornhill.
