First Draught: Cider suited for an autumn week that feels like summer

This autumn week has been more summer than winter and I have just the libation to suit that weather. Actually, I have six.

The Ontario Craft Cider Association has put together a remarkably good mixed pack that is at the LCBO right now. The beauty of this lineup is that no two options are alike and it covers the really broad spectrum of excellent offerings from Ontario cideries.

Nothing captures the olfactory sense of autumn like standing under an apple tree creaking with ripe fruit. Toronto's own midtown cider house has a good job of bottling this essence.

For advance fans there is the quite tart Pommies Farmhouse and the subtly funky Draught Cider by Spirit Tree. But for those making early-stage forays into good cider the Forbidden by Coffin Ridge and the entry from Brickworks Ciderhouse are good gateways. 

Batch 1904, named after one of Toronto's devastating fires, is a good introduction to tart cider with just a hint of acid, a slight sweetness and palate-scrubbing carbonation. It drinks like its only ingredient: Ontario apples.

It comes as part of the representative and quite adventurous Ontario Craft Cider Mixed Pack, which also has five other ciders, most notably Pommies Farmhouse and Spirit Tree Draught Cider.
