In Japan, izakayas are afterwork hangouts where time-crunched workers revive themselves. Essentially the Japanese version of the pub, the izakaya focuses on drink first, though sustenance is provided to balance out the alcohol. At Don Don Izakaya, patrons aren’t greeted by a raucous staff like at the city’s other noteworthy spot, Guu, but the atmosphere is just as welcoming.
In terms of beverage, the selection is almost overwhelming, encompassing beer, sake and shochu, as well as cocktails. The honey plum sour stars Gekkeikan plum wine ($6.50). The plum wine is layered atop liquid honey, which sits at the base of the glass, and is topped with soda water and a Japanese plum. Stir vigorously to combine the flavours as you wait for your parade of dishes to appear.
