Concert Review: Buzz band Ought power through short but sweet Monday night set

Montreal band Ought took the stage at the Drake Underground and immediately launched into their breakout hit “Today More Than Any Other Day,” setting the tone for a fast-paced set that pleased the sizable turnout of well-mustashioed hipsters on hand on a Monday night.

Drawing almost exclusively from their stellar debut album More Than Any Other Day, the band, featuring the very unique vocal stylings of Tim Beeler, were in fine form and the crowd appreciative. Ought is often compared to early Talking Heads and Beeler is obviously the reason. His art-punk aesthetic is charming and his energy level pretty much ideal. He moves easily from talking his way through a song to total rock-out mode and you can’t help but watch the guy. He’s that engaging.

Highlights included “Today, More Than Any Other Day,” as well as a particularly blistering “Pleasant Heart,” and the rather jaunty “The Weather Song.”

The band, made up mostly of Americans and an Australian, got together at McGill University in 2012. They’ve been touring basically non-stop since their album was released this spring, and they’re back in town again on July 25 at the Silver Dollar before heading overseas for a European tour.

Other members of Ought include Matt May (keyboards), Ben Stidworthy (bass) and Australian Tim Keen (drums). Don’t miss them next time around. Bands this original and flat-out fun don’t come around nearly often enough.
