City Hacks: Where to play with ponies or just play the ponies

As residents of the Golden Horseshoe, you’d think we would be more connected to all things equine. Sadly, apart from the occasional mounted police prancing by, most Torontonians are pretty alienated from horses. Well, this is the season to put the horse back before the cart:

Running from Nov. 6 to 15, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is a highlight in any hippophile’s calendar. Its Horse Show boasts events all day, every day of the fair, from breed showcases to races to jumping championships.

While you’re down at Exhibition Place, you can also swing through the Horse Palace, which has been Toronto’s premier equestrian facility since its construction in 1931. The Mounted Unit of the Toronto Police Service is stationed there, as is the Riding Academy.

For those whose horse appreciation is more high stakes in nature, there’s a new off-track betting option. Shoeless Joe’s on King Street now includes a dedicated horse-racing lounge, complete with rows of cushy chairs and a dozen big-screen TVs broadcasting international pony races. They’ve even hired a racing expert to oversee the spot and talk shop.

To soak up the spirit of the racetrack without risking a single cent, check out the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, housed at Woodbine Racetrack.
