Every March, sporting fans congregate in bars and living rooms across this great land to bask in the madness. March Madness, that is: the annual NCAA men’s basketball tournament south of the border, which many consider the best sporting event of the year.
Pools overflow with amateur prognosticators, many of whom may not have seen a single NCAA game before the tournament starts but by the powers of social media become overnight experts.
But one question that always confounds would-be Toronto fans is in determining what team to cheer on. We suggest determining the Toronto content on teams in the tourney and going from there.
One team assured of a berth is the University of Kentucky, which lost last year’s final to Duke University. Consider Duke the New England Patriots of the NCAA: the team everyone loves to hate.
Kentucky features freshman point guard Jamal Murray who went to high school in Orangeville and helped the Canadian national team to a silver medal at the recent Pan Am Games.
Dillon Brooks is also a player to watch at this year’s tourney. One of the stars at Oregon University, this Mississauga native is a flashy, fun player to keep an eye on this month.
Both teams have a legit shot at making a deep run.
Other teams to consider are Florida State, featuring Scarborough’s Xavier Rathan-Mayes, and Toronto native Duane Notice’s South Carolina.
