Even if horse racing isn’t an every weekend event for many, the Queen’s Plate is something every Torontonian should experience. The race is exciting, but the fashion, food and fun are what set it apart. And how often does the humble hat rule the day? Here are some tips for finding that perfect fascinator for race day on July 3 from the Queen’s Plates’ official milliner, David Dunkley.
“Remember,” he says, “millinery is suppose to be FUN at the Queen’s Plate!”
What is most important when choosing a race-day hat?
Hats for the Queen’s are all about fun and style! Whether you are in the Hats and Horseshoe arena or trackside in the Royal Box or in the grandstand — a hat should represent your personality and style.
What are the most popular styles this season?
Thank you, Kate Middleton and the Royal Family — women love the fascinator this season and have for many seasons since the Royal Wedding.
And what type of hat never goes out of style?
Millinery styles are consistent for men — fedoras, boaters and the top hat never change shape and are a constant for the races. Women are not loyal to any one shape (thank goodness), and for the Queen’s Plate bigger is better for them with every type of colour and shape combination!
What is your personal favourite?
For men (in the Hats and Horseshoe area), a top hat! It’s bold, handsome and shows you mean business. For women, a fascinator or hat that reflects their personality and style.
