Bar Ape, Toronto’s mobile gelato shop, opens its first storefront near St. Clair West

After three years of selling frozen treats out of a food truck — or more specifically, a Piaggio Ape (pronounced “ah-pay”) — James Carnevale and Nick Genova have opened a bricks-and-mortar location of their gelato business, Bar Ape.

The small storefront, tucked behind The Rushton, is open seasonally (until mid-fall, give or take) and only has patio seating. Inside, Carnevale and Genova concoct made-made-from-scratch gelato and sorbet in flavours such as raspberry, dark chocolate and mango. They serve it out of a soft-serve ice cream machine for effect.

“It’s an experience that people haven’t had,” Genova says.

The food truck is still in operation, and the new storefront also sells Bar Ape’s signature gelato bars, along with sundae cups and tubs of gelato.
