At the Bar: Lavelle, the latest see-and-be-seen spot pairs swilling with swimming

Toronto gets sky-high aspirations with King Street’s rooftop bar sensation

The comparison game
Torontonians like to see themselves as on par with New Yorkers. We’ve got miles of culture, an endless parade of trendy eateries and tons of green space. Pair that with comparatively cheaper rent, and there’s lots worth ranting about. One place where we fall short is the rooftop. Manhattan nights mean stints on the roof of the Standard, sipping cocktails and taking in the twinkling city lights. Save for the Thompson Hotel roof, Toronto could never quite compete with that — until now.

The new player
Boasting 16,000 square feet of patio space and a rooftop pool (well three, actually) that puts much of North America to shame (it’s one of the longest), Lavelle is the cat’s pyjamas. Primed for preening and prancing, the rooftop wannabe-paradise offers incredible views over to the CN Tower, six luxe cabanas, one ice cream bar, plus grassy knolls for chilling (hence the Standard comparisons). And who knows — you may even spot a lion cub.

The tipple
The Freak-A-Holic ($17) is one of their signature cocktails. Senior bartender Reece Presley pours a list of beverages that play off the sunshine and complement the menu from chef Romain Avril. The summery tipple sees Rémy Martin cognac matched with Cointreau, fresh watermelon juice and lemon. The result is a drink that possesses some sweetness from the watermelon, some refreshing citric action from the triple sec and lemon and plenty of warmth thanks to the cognac.
