Toronto … the final frontier. We boldly went where no man has gone before and found the owner of the Star Trek space van, one of the few people who are fluent in Klingon and the commander of the Crimson Knight Fleet in honour of the release of Star Trek Beyond today.

What is the Crimson Knight Fleet?
We are a group of Klingon fans in Ontario who are part of the KAG. We go to conventions, parades, charity events and will be at the CNE’s opening weekend this summer as part of a Star Trek 50th anniversary celebration.
What are your plans for the movie release?
Our various groups across Ontario are planning to attend opening night, in costume, of course. It has been suggested we might show up carrying signs in a mock protest of the movie, based on the lack of Klingons.

David Yonge-Mallo and his wife Mina Razaghpour
When did your wife join you in Star Trek fandom?
She found out her mom was a fan from back when the original series used to be shown on Iranian television dubbed into Persian.
What is your level of proficiency in Klingon?
I’m one of the few people in the world who can converse in Klingon in real time without a dictionary or other kind of assistance.
When were you first introduced to the series?
I moved from Hong Kong to Canada at the age of eight. I used to watch the original series to learn English by imitating Captain Kirk.

What are your plans for the movie release?
I have passes for the premiere on Friday, and our show at Comedy Bar is on Saturday, so I want to make sure all my references are up to date.
Federation vs. Klingons:
Always Federation. They have the track record to prove it.
Favourite character?
I’ve always loved Kirk. I even read all of William Shatner’s novels. Some of the stuff he wrote about Captain Kirk and Star Trek is just so awesome.

Dan’s space van

How did you first hear about the space van?
The previous owner put it up for sale on Kijiji and it went viral.
Who have been some of the guests on the show?
Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies, Steve Poltz, Matt Mays, the Milk Carton kids and the spaceman himself, astronaut Chris Hadfield.
Are you a Trekkie?
We grew up on Star Trek. It taught us to dream of the galaxy and question everything. It was the only show Martin Luther King Jr. allowed his family to watch. So if he was a Trekkie, then I am too.
