Chaplin Estates is at the centre of it all, when it comes to Midtown Toronto, yet while walking one of the tree-lined streets, it feels like a world away. No wonder it’s one of the hottest neighbourhoods in the city. And with the Eglinton Crosstown LRT soon to arrive and a massive development that should include a big new neighbourhood park right behind it, everything is coming up Chaplin Estates.
The ’hood
Chaplin Estates is located to the southwest of the Yonge and Eglinton intersection and bounded to the south by the Beltline Trail that runs along an old railway corridor south of Eglinton and between Avenue Road and Yonge. The small area is characterized by spacious detached homes on tree-lined streets.
The vibe
The neighbourhood is upscale, to be sure, but family-oriented with more than its fair share of health-oriented occupants drawn to the area for its proximity to the beloved Beltline Trail, which snakes through the area’s southern border. Don’t be surprised to run into fine athletic specimens sharing the trail with a gaggle of local moms and dads out for a brisk morning walk with their strollers.
Cost
First, consider that this is one of the finest central Toronto neighbourhoods with serious growth potential. Then, maybe the entry point of $2 million for a detached home might not seem so steep. But don’t despair, there is a condo and townhome boom in the area with plenty of options for first-time homebuyers and those looking to scale back and move into a more happening ’hood.
Grub
The dining scene in the Yonge and Eglinton area is becoming more diverse with a range of culinary options, from fine dining to more casual gastro-pub fare. Jaipur Grille, one of the city’s best Indian restaurants, is a neighbourhood favourite. Five Doors North, Lil’ Baci and Zucca offer delicious Italian dining, and Tabülé’s Middle Eastern cuisine is popular.
Racks
Eglinton Way is close by and offers fine clothing boutiques such as Honey. Lamania boutique is also close at hand on Yonge Street. And, of course, the Yonge Eglinton shopping centre.
Walkability
Chaplin Estates is very high on the walkability scale. It rates 96 on the Walk Score scale, with everything a short walk away along Yonge Street.
Commute
The neighbourhood is located within walking distance of two subway stations: Eglinton and Davisville. In addition, the new Crosstown LRT line will be open in 2020 (on schedule and on budget of course), which will be able to whisk commuters east and west also. The Allen Expressway is a 10-minute drive and links to Highway 401.
Schools
Whether private or public, Chaplin Estates allows residents access to the best schools in the city. Upper Canada College and Bishop Strachan School are close at hand as well as York School. At Yonge and Eglinton are North Toronto Collegiate and Northern Secondary. Oriole Park Junior Public School is within walking distance.
