I’m rehearsing an amazing new play called Within the Glass by Anna Chatterton. One couple’s embryo has mistakenly been implanted in another woman’s uterus. The two couples meet to discuss how they should proceed.
What begins as an attempt at a civilized discussion devolves into a savage and passionate confrontation, as secrets are revealed and deeply held beliefs are challenged. We see the most intimate details of their marriages revealed. Who keeps the “baby”? Should they abort? Adopt?
The play is one act starring myself, Philippa Domville, Nicola Correia-Damude and Rick Roberts, and despite the heavy content, we are laughing our heads off all the time as we try to navigate this finely crafted story. Andrea Donaldson, our director, is certainly not steering us away from the “funny” in the script. It’s a play that rides a fine edge between the comedy and tragedy if we get it right. I would definitely want to see this play.… if I weren’t in it, that is!
Within the Glass runs at the Tarragon Theatre Jan. 6 to Feb. 14.
