Next weekend is Buskerfest, Toronto’s annual celebration of all things great about street performances. In honour of the occasion, we take a look at two performers with an eye-catching common theme.
Silver Elvis (a.k.a. Peter Jarvis) is the elder statesman of Toronto street performers. Over the last 17 years, he’s also performed at festivals around the world in such far-flung locales as New Zealand and Malaysia. Back in 1978, Jarvis was once a freestyle disco dance champion. His signature move? Why, the Robot, of course. He was also an actor on children’s television as well as a mime. A metallic silver jacket was all he needed to complete his character. You can catch Silver Elvis at this year’s BuskerFest, from Aug. 27 to 30.

Silver Elvis isn’t the only one with an appreciation for shiny paint. Fellow Toronto street performer and mime Jenny Jupiter will be joining the Silver One at this year’s festival. Jupiter has only been on earth (and in character) for a couple of years, and her signature move is a doozy. “I do shoot a lot of people,” she says. “I have a ray gun, and I’m not afraid to use it.”
Admission to the event is by donation (to the organizers, Epilepsy Toronto) and perfromers pass the hat after each set. Go to their website for the full schedule.
