Something about summertime gets homeowners itching for change. They start cleaning up their gardens, planting new flowers, painting their rooms and looking for ways to jazz up their decor.
So we looked to interior design expert and star of the hit show Love It Or List It for insight on what colours to choose, which trends to follow and which to leave behind.
Whether you’re looking to revamp your indoor living space, or creating a backyard oasis, Farr will give you just the tips you need to get started.
What are the hottest trends in home decor this season?
I am seeing the pantone colour marsala more than I want to. It's a trend which I don't plan to follow since I don't particularly love the colour in a home. That's the thing to remember. You don't have to feel compelled to be “on trend.”
Keep an open mind! Embrace a trend if you love it.
What are you currently embracing?
I am embracing designs that are from a time gone by, that have been reimagined and updated for today. Warm metals, comfortable high back seating, and textiles with colour and texture but tweaked so it's clearly 2015 and not 1915!
What are the most popular colours for this season, other than marsala?
Earth tones are always popular and for a good reason. However, I like the deep, rich blues influenced by the colours of the exotic aesthetic of the Mediterranean and countries like Morocco.
What are the new trends when it comes to the layout of a home?
I see open concept being re-thought. It doesn't work for every home, or every lifestyle. Separation of rooms is often a better option and can be achieved without closing off the spaces.
How can we achieve separation while keeping an open feel?
Take the Japanese screen concept, and apply it with sliding bar doors, or pocket doors, semi opaque, open laser cut design, or solid doors.
How do you feel about home design trends?
I really do not subscribe to actual trends. They can date a home. I like fashion trends, which cross over to the home, but I feel way better getting rid of a dress that's no longer on trend than a big ticket home product, such as a sofa!
What’s the simplest way to refresh a room for summer?
Paint colour and window coverings are two easy ways to change up a room. You can do this seasonally or annually. Another easy method is simply re-arranging the furniture.
What are the pattern and texture trends this season?
I'm happy to see that they run the gamut! Something for everyone!
