Sustainable seafood store HOOKED partners with Rowe Farms to open new location in Leaside

Husband and wife team Dan and Kristin Donovan of popular Leslieville ethical-seafood market Hooked will be opening their third store next week in partnership with Rowe Farms on Bayview Avenue.

“This is a cooperative arrangement between the two independent businesses and builds on the similarity of values and the neighbourhood store front design to offer customers better access to carefully sourced seafood. The partnership was a natural thing, Rowe has been our neighbor in Leslieville for years,” says Dan Donovan, of the new partnership. Hooked and Rowe Farms share the same ethos of sustainable foods. His latest store will be opening inside the existing Rowe Farms store on Bayview. “It will a part of the fabric of the Rowe’s store. A full counter with all the fish products we carry at the Leslieville and Kensington shops.”

Hooked’s first location opened on Queen Street East in March, 2011. The Donovans carefully sourced fish and shellfish from respectable farmers who use sustainable fishing methods that do not harm the surrounding environment. The store quickly gained a reputation for being the go-to place to find the best fish in the city. As we chatted, Donovan shared his excitement for spot prawns. “Right now we have live spot prawns from B.C.,” he says. “It’s such a short season, and people love them.”

In October of 2012 the second hooked store opened in Kensington Market. Discussions are currently underway to expand this pilot to other Rowe Farms locations later this year.

The new location opens on Monday and will operate 7 days a week from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
